Murder By Death is a group from Bloomington IN. I have no idea how popular they are, so maybe you already know them and this is a wasted post. Ok, so they're the namesake of a 1970's detective flick staring Truman Capote. The title of this post is a quote from the movie. So is this, 'Be quiet everyone! I smell something! It's - Good God! - FRANKS AND BEANS!' Three years ago I got drunk with them twice in the same day before one of their shows. One of my favorite tracks is an adaptation of a Johnny Cash song, I'll try to put it on the grooveshark. They are playing in Austin on Sat 5th Feb at Red 7. If you like what you hear join me.
Jenny Parrott of Shotgun Party has another band, a duo with Vaughn Walters, and they just released their album "Yay!" and it is great. I'm not a stellar descriptor, but I'd say it sounds something like magnetic fields, crossed with decembrists, with some fiddle and a firm country twang... or something.
Anyhow, they are playing a benefit for HAAM with The Wax and The Karate Kids on Saturday Jan 29th that sounds like an awesome time (free arcade games what!?).
This first track is about the civil war, and the second about Bobby Kennedy. They are not all historical, but these are my favorites.
Bloody Beetroots have a remix album coming out on Feb. 14th. Here's an old one (Tiga remix). And I already told you it was too heavy for Monday morning. By-the-by here's my show schedule:
Friday 28 Jan - T-Bird and the Breaks at Continental Club
Wednesday 2 Feb - Deerhoof at Emos
Saturday 7 Feb - Murder By Death at Red 7
Friday 18 Feb - Tapes N Tapes at Mowhawk
As you all know, I was super smitten with first aid kit when they were in town for ACL. Apparently Jack White is fan as well, and they just released two songs recorded by him in Gnashville. Here is one o' them.
I think most of us heard Baba B-man's Natural Selection song when it showed up over the summer. The full album is on his bandcamp and a video funded by the National Science Foundation is on the way. My favorite and the source of this post's title is 'Sexual Selection.'
Was language originally a mechanism for survival or reproduction? Can you talk a predator out of attacking? Can you talk a parasite out of infecting? Can you talk a potential mate in to consenting? Potentially, right?
Going home and back to work requires some pick me up music. I'm not sure this does, but it's beautiful anywho. Also, given the mass bird die off of late, the cover is a fitting eulogy. 'Made In Heights' is a side project for Sabzi, DJ for Blue Scholars, and a new vocalist known only as Kelsey. You can download the whole album free and legal from their bandcamp http://madeinheights.bandcamp.com/. Looking forward to seeing everyone soon.
Buke and Gass are a duo from brooklyn named after two instruments they actually created together (as in actually made the instruments themselves), the buke is some sort of baritone ukulele with six strings and the gass (pronounced "gace") is a guitar-bass hybrid. If you only read that description you would probably think that their music is boring and soft hipster crap, but actually it's surprisingly busy and energetic, and the girl has a very nice voice. They released a full length called Riposte in September, but I enjoy their 2009 EP better. Here it is in its entirety for your streaming pleasure.
